Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Responds to Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Games from City
The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, implied that the city was ready for a dispute with US President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast recently to answer comments from the White House, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."
A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even the president, can undo it.
She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are directed at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu further stated, "We will keep being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting what Boston stands for." She concluded by stressing her commitment for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for Boston."
Trump's Statements and FIFA Role
Earlier this week, Infantino was seen alongside Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also been to the Oval Office and presented World Cup and Club World Cup awards to the president as gifts.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being burned. He replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of the organization, who's great."
He continued, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information
President Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from 11 June to July 19 next summer.
