Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Thrilling Overtime Victory

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive points late in double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored a team-high 35 points, including two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental together with the game's hero.

"Grit and defence," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the game, the team's title banner was raised at their arena, while the players were presented with their championship rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some payback on this Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the road team.

The Lakers were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
